At a glance
Radiesse does two things at once. It smooths and lifts the moment it is injected, and over the following months it prompts your skin to build its own collagen. That is why it is grouped with biostimulators rather than ordinary fillers, and why the result tends to outlast the product itself.
If your cheeks have flattened, your jawline has softened, or you look tired in photographs when you feel perfectly fine, you have probably been handed a list of filler names and asked to pick one. Radiesse sits slightly apart from the rest. It does add volume straight away, like a filler. But its real work is getting your own skin to rebuild support, which is why our injectables and fillers menu groups it with the biostimulators rather than the hyaluronic acid gels.
How Does Radiesse Work?
Radiesse arrives as a smooth gel carrying tiny calcium-based particles. The gel does the visible work immediately, softening folds and restoring volume. The particles stay behind afterwards and give your skin something to build new collagen around.
You leave your appointment looking different, and that is the gel. It is the part most people picture when they think of filler. It holds the shape while something slower gets going underneath.
The particles are calcium-based, the same mineral your bones and teeth are made from, so your body recognises them rather than treating them as something foreign. They break down gradually over the months that follow.
Where Radiesse Is Used
Radiesse is a mid-face, jawline and neck product. If lips are what you are considering, choosing the best lip filler for your goals is the better starting point.
Why Does Radiesse Keep Working After the Gel Fades?
Because the particles prompt your skin to make new collagen. Collagen is the scaffolding that keeps skin firm, and we all make less of it every year. Radiesse gives your own cells a reason to make more, so the support left behind is yours rather than the product’s.
That is what makes the timeline unusual. Over roughly three to six months the gel is absorbed while new collagen builds in behind it, so it is a handover rather than a fade. Some people notice a brief settling in that window, where the first fullness softens slightly before the result steadies. That is normal, and it is the treatment working as intended.
The effect is well documented. A 2023 study in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology found that the particles prompt collagen-producing cells directly.
What It Will Not Do
Building collagen improves firmness and support. It is not a face lift, and any treatment promising to rebuild your face is overpromising. Expect to look rested and better supported, rather than altered.
How Long Does Radiesse Last?
Most people see results that hold twelve months or longer. The gel itself is gone within three to six months; the collagen it encouraged is what carries the rest. The range is wide because it depends on you: where it was placed, how much that area moves, and your own metabolism.
Areas that move constantly use product up faster than still ones, which is why a jawline and a smile line can behave differently on the same face. Smoking, sun and general health all play a part. These variables apply to every injectable, and how long dermal fillers last covers them in more detail.

A hyaluronic acid filler adds volume and holds it. Radiesse adds volume and then asks your skin to build its own support. That makes it a strong choice for structure, meaning cheeks, jawline and the lower face, and a less obvious one where you mainly want softness.

| Hyaluronic acid fillers | Radiesse | |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | Adds volume and holds it | Adds volume, then builds your own collagen |
| Can it be reversed? | Yes | No |
| How long it lasts | Varies by product and area | Often twelve months or more |
| Best for | Lips, fine lines, softness | Cheeks, jawline and neck, for structure |
Neither is better. They answer different questions, and a good plan often uses both, plus something for movement lines, which volume cannot fix. Our dermal filler page covers the hyaluronic acid side of the menu.
What Should You Know Before You Book?
The short version: go gradually, and go to someone who does this often. Radiesse rewards a careful, conservative hand more than most injectables, so your injector’s experience matters more than anything printed on the box.
Bruising, redness, swelling and tenderness are common for a few days and usually settle within a week or two. Some people notice a little firmness where the injections went in. Starting conservatively is the sound approach: less than you think you want, let it settle, then add more if you still want it. Adding is easy, and most people are glad they went slowly.
The Part That Is Yours
The result is created in the treatment room. Product choice, depth and placement are your injector’s contribution, and they are what produce the outcome. Preparation and aftercare are yours, and they protect it. Those are different jobs: what to do before dermal fillers and filler aftercare cover your half.
See the Work Before You Decide
Ask any injector to show you their own results, and look for faces that still look like themselves. Ours are published rather than kept to the consultation room: the Radiesse before and after gallery shows three Boulder Skin Bar cases. You can also read about the team at Boulder Skin Bar before you book.

FAQs
Both, in that order, which is why the label confuses people. It adds volume immediately like a filler, then prompts your own collagen like a biostimulator. Our menu groups it with the biostimulators because the collagen is the part that lasts.
A smooth gel carrying tiny calcium-based particles. Calcium is what your bones and teeth are made from, so your body recognises it rather than treating it as foreign. The gel gives you the immediate result; the particles stay a while longer and encourage your skin to build collagen, then break down naturally.
Unlike hyaluronic acid fillers, Radiesse is not dissolved with an enzyme. It softens on its own over time instead. That is why we start conservatively and build up, rather than placing everything in one visit. Most people prefer that pace anyway.
Cheeks, the mid-face, the jawline and the neck, which are the places where you want structure and support rather than softness. Lips are treated with a different product, chosen because it stays soft and moves naturally.
You will see a difference the same day, and that is the gel. The collagen builds quietly over the next three to six months as the gel is absorbed. Most people find the overall result holds twelve months or more, though it varies with the area treated and with you.
